My name is Niamh Mc Ardle, I live in Ireland and have 2 sons, Zach and Alex. Zach is 5 and Alex is 4 and Zach has Downs Syndrome. We didn't know when Zach was born that he had downs. He passed all the usual paediatric tests and it was only when I looked at him later on that I thought he had some of the usual downs features. I will not say that we were not devasted at the beginning as it was totally unexpected. But Zach had no heart problems and no major health implications. 5 Years on, I can say that he is an absolutely charmer. He is in 'normal' school in the same class as his brother. He is quite lazy and needs to be 'rewarded' or promised rewards when we want him to do his homework/ speech exercises etc. but once he is excited about something, or once an element of 'fun' is brought into each task, he becomes enthused. For all new parents out there, yes, it is a mixed bag of emotions for quite some time after your child is born, but 5 years on I can say that we have more or less got over our initial sadness and are simply enjoying our beautiful child.

I wanted to let you know about our new website http://noahsdad.com ! OUr son Noah was born on Dec 15, 2010 and since then we have been learning so much! And having a ton of fun doing it! We wanted to create a site where people could get a look at the life of a family raising a child w/ Down Syndrome. I think if the world just had good, ACCURATE information, they wouldn't choose to terminate the pregnancy. My hope is to let the world see that our life is much more "normal" then it is "un-normal!" :)

The response has really good! I'd love for you guys to visit, and link to the site. you can also subscribe at http://noahsdad.com/subscribe ... My wife is a pediatrician and is in the process of writing some great resources that you can keep at hand...we are even making a "friends starter kit!" Let's be honest, most of our friends didn't know how to respond at first! :) I'm looking forward to hearing your stories and getting to know you!

We found out after she was born she had down syndrome (the hospital did a genetic test to confirm), so it was quite a shock. While at the hospital she had an ultrasound of her heart, and there were no problems at all. We have her first appointment with a geneticist next week, and I ordered a book on Amazon but it hasn't arrived yet. We love our baby, but we are completely confused and not really sure what we are heading into or what is coming in our families future. Where do we go to start learning how raising our daughter will be like? What do we need to do now?

I am 5 months pregnant and they found a white spot on the heart, which i assume is a IEF? I wasnt too worried as my blood test and the other ultra sound all came back low risk, however i have now found out that i my sister had a baby with downs, my dads brother had one and my dads aunt. Does anyone know what i should be thinking or feeling right now? Im so worried, but i dont want to terminate, but im not sure how i will come to terms with this?

I was about 30 weeks when I found out Lexi had DS-and they found it quite by accident during an ultrasound for my having Rh antibodies, during this they saw her heart defect and did amnio. I was not at all disturbed or worried about the DS but was rather frantic about the surgery she would be having. At 3 months we took her to Stollery Childrens Hospital in Edmonton and the surgery went SO smooth she was out in 7 days, at a follow up apt her cardiologist sais she doesnt remember the last time she saw a repair done so well!:) We still have some issues with hearing but are waiting on more testing,in the meantime I am trying to learn baby sign as even though she can hear I feel it would be good to communicate as it could be years before she talks.I do have a question regarding physio. I got a call saying they were sending Lexi "hip-huggers" to help keep her legs togerther-has anyone ever heard of this? is it necessary? I dont think Lex is any more 'flexable' than normal for ds and I just dont want to do anything unnecessary. We live in a very small town, her therapists come from out of town (a not much larger town) and there is not much knowledge on ds around here. Her doc. in town didnt even know there was a seperate growth chart for ds children,so I thought I would the experts-YOU-.no one knows more than a mom/dad with experiance!:)
This seems to be a great group and I'm glad I found it.

A mothers Love is Blind and you will still think that your baby is the most beautiful baby ever created, you will be ever more so protective over this special baby than any other and i can honestly tell you with my hand on my heart that it will be the greatest thing that has ever happened to you- the world will seem more colorful and life will have a meaning like never before. As your child reaches each milestone ( no matter how long they take because they will get there) there is a feeling in your heart that cannot be explained, its beyond proud!!!! lol xxx
